Speaker: Paul Bertram
Topic: Palliacco and Caregiving
Paul has been a palliative care volunteer for over 20 years. Before retiring he was the marketing and business development manager at a multinational pharma company which involved him in research and education in palliative care.  But it was only after family members became ill with terminal cancer that Paul had firsthand experience of volunteer support services in his own home. This, combined with the training at Palliacco, helps him to help others who are living what he had to. Paul is also trained in grief support and has accompanied several individuals in the Laurentians through very difficult times after the loss of loved ones. Come to hear the story of Palliacco and ask questions about who they are, where they come from, what they do, and how their trained volunteers might be able to help you or someone you know whose life becomes challenged by chronic severe or life-altering illness.

Speaker: André D. Voizard
Topic: Powers of Attorney and Protection Mandates: helping you plan for the future
It’s not pleasant to think about losing your independence. But thinking about it now can avoid problems for you and your loved ones should you become incapacitated. Notary and legal advisor André D. Voizard will explain the intricacies of both the power of attorney and protection mandate documents at this month’s Laurentian Club of Canada meeting. Power of attorney: The person who accepts to act for you under a power of attorney acts in your name in situations you have described. For example, Rosalie could make a power of attorney and name her brother, Rock, to collect rent, pay bills and sign a contract of sale for her cottage.  Protection mandate: Formerly called “mandates in case of incapacity”, the protection mandate can help you plan for the future. Your aunt is very sick, and the whole family is worried. She can’t manage her affairs and isn’t safe in her apartment. Who will pay her bills? Who will take care of her? Learn about both – and the difference between them.
